What is self promotion? Who promotes themselves? Solo Business professionals often engage
in self promotion and self promotion is the promoting, advertising, marketing, and branding of
yourself. Why would a business professional promote herself? A regular business may advertise
and may market the business as a whole. A solo professional may be the business and, hence, may
just promote herself as a person or an expert rather than a whole business.
Often, a person that engages in self promotion is somebody that works for herself or works
from home. This could be somebody from any profession. It could be an accountant. It could
be a creator of arts and crafts. It could be a business consultant. It could be an engineer. It
could be a graphics designer. It could be a babysitter. It could be a photographer. In any case,
it is a solo professional that works for themselves that want to promote themselves and
differentiate themselves from the competition to gain more business.
Self promotion can be the same as any advertising or marketing that a regular business does
but usually consists of cheaper methods to do so. Because of this, self promotion can sometimes
be very creative to be able to compete with the marketing budgets of big business.
Professionals that are succesful at self promotion know that they do not need a big marketing
budget to promote themselves. They know the value of a customer or client so they make sure
that when they get one they keep him. Often, self promotion comes from word-of-mouth referrals
from existing clients.
People engaged in self promotion are solo professionals that have quit their jobs to work for
themselves. Hence, they often start small. They see what promotion strategies work for them and
which don't. They will often expand on the strategies that work and ditch the ones that don't.
Self promotion is an art - you have to do what works for you.
